CBD venue offers central location for first aid training in Perth

The new $1.5m St John Ambulance WA training centre in Milligan Street, Perth trained its first students this week.

The initial student cohort includes about 15 volunteers from the Kings Park Volunteer Guides who completed an accredited Provide First Aid course.

The venue consists of multiple training rooms as well as first aid kit retailing and conference facilities.

First Aid Services and Training General Manager Aaron Harding said: “St John believes that first aid should be a part of everyone’s life, and to deliver on that we need training venues that people can readily access -- and this Perth venue gives people that great accessibility and convenience.”

“This training centre is located within five minutes walk of Wellington St station, so for people or groups based in the city, travel won’t be necessary.”

Mr Harding said first aid was a vital skill for people to have.

“You never know when you may be called on to assist in an emergency situation and potentially save a life,” he said.

Mr Harding said first aid training run out the venue would concentrate on sessions that run from a couple of hours up to full day courses, with both early morning, evening and weekend sessions available.

He said it was great having a group of the calibre of the Kings Park guides come in and do the training in its first week of operation.

“The guides are a great body and they are based at Perth’s premier tourist attraction so to have them on board with St John is terrific,” he said.

“Kings Park is visited by an estimated six million people a year so I commend the guides for coming to St John to learn the skills to deal with an emergency."

In 2015/16, St John trained more than 300,000 people in first aid, representing 11 per cent of the WA population.

This new venue also represents a reconnection of St John with the city, which housed the organisation’s state headquarters up until 2003.

However, St John has had a presence in the CBD dating back to 1July 1922 at a building on Murray St (which was demolished in the 1980s).

The centre is located at Level 1, 67 Milligan St, Perth.
