Paramedics are Australia’s most trusted profession

St John Ambulance paramedics have topped a poll to be named the nation’s most trusted profession. SJAWA Chief Executive Officer Tony Ahern said it was the eighth consecutive year paramedics had topped the Australian Reader’s Digest annual Trust Survey. Mr Ahern said paramedics had to maintain calm and professional in the most stressful and challenging of situations:

“It’s this ability that fosters respect and trust from the community and they deserve every bit of recognition they receive,” Mr Ahern said, “while our paramedics do not seek recognition, the community’s faith in them is very much appreciated.”

He said SJAWA employed more than 600 career ambulance officers, who attended 171,462 cases in 2010-11, up from 164,250 cases the previous year. The poll was conducted in April 2012, with 1268 people asked to rank professions on a scale of one to 10.
